Conclusion

Overall, Youtube’s platform has created opportunities for many Asian Americans to express their intersectional identities and to connect with a wide and diverse audience. Before Youtube, there was no place in media where anyone could become successful without prior resources. All that Michelle Phan, Nikita Dragun, Bretman Rock and Patrick Starr needed was a camera, a computer, and a passion to create a brand for themselves that has lasted for many years. Their passion for makeup allows them to reach young AAPI viewers who want to learn how to do makeup on an AAPI face, and they instill valuable messages of inclusivity and confidence along the way. Each of their channels is an online space where viewers can go to feel part of a larger community. The accessibility and broad scope of Youtube has helped to foster inclusivity and acceptance on the internet.

Your final project features a number of Asian American beauty bloggers who are very interesting in their self-representations in terms of race, gender, and sexuality on social media. Your exploration of their media practice could be more substantial both in its scope and in critical engagement. Some of your posts are too reliant on reportage, and do not do enough in critical analysis. Also, I would have liked to see you engagement more with Asian American studies and media scholars including Minh-ha T. Pham, Elizabeth Nathanson, and others who could help to provide that critical framework in your project. As a final project that is sited on our class blog, you did make use of its context quite well to include links and embedded media, images, and other web-based content to support your discussion.
